b'A new cabin build for an electric launch - Lady CharlotteLOA 43ft 6ins. Beam 8ft. Draft 2ft 6ins.Built by J. Crichton & Co at Saltney in 1914. Riveted steel hull. Mahogany decks, superstructure and fit-out. Originally steam, now powered by a 8Kw 72voltAC electric motor. This project has been some years in gestation and is all the better for that wait.My old friend, engineer Michael Williams, is re-building the riveted steel hull using exactly the same techniques that built the boat 98 years ago.Our work is to build the new Edwardian-style cabin and fit-out designed by Andrew Wolstenholme using beautiful and carefully sourced Mahogany. Making complicated timber structures such as Lady Charlottes cabin to a standard that will stand the test of time is a rare delight for a craftsman. There are few people alive today with first hand experience of the joinery required to build a genuine Edwardian-style launch saloon. These techniques are so quickly lost if craftsmen ignore the accumulated knowledge of previous generations. The reference held in the surviving early Thames launches is a very valuable asset but nothing is better than the age old handing on of skills from generous fellow boatbuilders.30'
