b'Mohawk - a yacht tenderLOA 17ft 2ins. Beam 5ft 2ins. Draft 1ft 9ins.Built circa 1920 by C. T. Letcher. Carvel Mahogany planking on Rock Elm timbers. Oak, Spruce and Mahogany decks. Oak and Mahogany fit-out.Restored 1992.This little launch has a wealth of warm memories for me. She came to us indirectly from a dispersed maritime museum to be restored. With a bit of detective work the original engine was tracked down to be reunited with the restored launch and now, many years on, she is looking better and better.A handsome motor launch with double cockpit was the requirement for grand yachts of the 1910s to the late 1930s. The forward cockpit was for luggage and crew, often with little protection from any spray from the Solent Chop, and the aft cockpit was for the guests to be taken out to the yacht at anchor in the roads. Mohawks aft cockpit has a beautiful Teak grating sole board for the guests accommodation and can be protected from the weather by a pram hood; the crew area forward houses the engine and steering jackstaff and has basic painted sole boards. She would have been lifted aboard the yacht on davits, and the attachments are still in place.56'
