b'Polly - an electric motor launchLOA 13ft 1in. Beam 4ft 6ins. Draft 14ins. Designed by Andrew Wolstenholme. Built in 1998 by Henwood & Dean Boatbuilders.Mahogany carvel planking on Oak ribs. Mahogany fit-out.This was a memorable commission - to design and build a little launch to complement a beautiful 18ft sailing boat Falcon built by Herbert Woods in about 1920. The new launch was to match Falcon in construction, hull shape and materials. The project was made even more pleasurable by the success of the three-way partnership: the client, the designer and the boatbuilder, all working towards producing a beautiful little boat.Craftsmen need a generous spirit and should share their skills and experience. Neil Garside is one such craftsman and his eye for a fair line and a good run of planking helped me immeasurably while I was building Polly. The way a boat sits on the water, how the passengers are accommodated, where the batteries are fitted so the boat balances properly: these are all basic elements of boat design. However, beyond these purely practical considerations lies the true art of a skilled designer and Andrew brought together a multitude of elements to perfect the proportion and line of this launch.76'
